Talk for Nodoor Astrology School, China

Our word Zodiac means ‘Circle of Animals’, suggesting we are each a living ecosystem of diverse creatures, each needing habitat in our lives.  In many ways the fundamental astrological question for every person is how to help each of these creatures find a way to follow their instincts and learn to live with one another.  But like in our shared ecosystem on Earth, most people seem to organize their internal life with some creatures empowered and others suppressed or lacking suitable habitat.  In this talk we will explore the transformative potential of connecting with the astrological symbols of those relegated to the borderlands, whether by trauma, dissociation, family or cultural requirements, or simply necessity.  We will draw from case studies of one-time astrological consultation as well as longer-term psychotherapy and art therapy.  Through these examples, we will outline some principles for understanding how these planets “speak”, how they show up in consultation, how their instincts can be honored and brought forward, and how this process can change the deep structural organization of the personality and address the most pressing concerns that bring people to astrologers.
