“On the seashore of endless worlds, children play.” – Rabindranath Tagore.

In this time of Capricorn, with Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto all joining their own south nodes there, confronted now by the extended stay of Mars in Aries, we may feel a narrowing of attention to the ‘real’, measurable, concrete events that are piling up.  Yet the goat of Capricorn also has a magical and mystical tail, and this suggests the deep need to periodically relocate our consciousness in the deep waters this creature was said to live within between his various creations in the world of form.  This energy is profoundly creative, resourcing, and erotic.  In the ancient world, it is the place from which new worlds were first glimpsed and crafted.

One of the gifts that astrology gives us is a place to play.  A chart is like a well-used playroom full of richly imagined symbols, secret signs and codes, rules and rituals, that only the players know, which we use to imagine and peer into endless worlds.  Play opens up transitional or liminal space, in which symbols and their meanings expand, open up, and invite curious unexpected journeys together.  In the modern world highly focused on what is ‘real’ and measurable, we need the deep rest, pleasure, and creativity, of play.  Play also connects us to deep resources in the psyche, almost always in unexpected ways.

Jacob Moreno, the creator of psychodrama, developed his methods through observing the often profound way that children processed and mediated social, familial, cultural and other intense dynamics in their play with one another.  The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott similarly suggested that all good counseling is a form of play, or assisting another in learning or re-learning to play.  It may be that the deepest medicine an astrological reading provides in modern life is this imaginal opportunity.  In this webinar, journeying with ancient myths and modern life stories, we will explore the rich metaphors of astrological play and dreaming, and how we can creatively participate with the sky and one another in developing a robust play-space capable of engaging deeply, meaningfully, and spontaneously with a wide range of dynamics in the chart.
