Mars in the astrological tradition is often experienced as the ‘problem planet’, the one who even defies the categories and grammars so carefully constructed by the time of Hellenistic astrologies.
In the mythic realm too, the ancients were highly sensitized to the dangers of Mars, showing a remarkable ambivalence towards this being who could destroy the still-nascent achievement of large human communities. But as so often the case, the myths contextualize this in wider and more complex ways, offering a wide range of expression of this energy and an understanding of its basic instincts and essential nature.

Given the strong link of Mars to the physical and the visceral we will especially explore through the stories the archetype’s mode of constellating sensation and soma — precisely what seemed to make him most dangerous, yet also essential. Mars protects, defends, and insists on Night ways of being that are the very energies that constantly refresh the functionality of Day. We will also explore the special relations of Mars with Venus, Jupiter, Pluto, and the Sun that myth speaks to and helps us understand in greater depth.
