Pluto was the ruler of the Underworld, and in Greek his name Hades was also the name of the place itself. In this webinar, we will seek to understand the rich and textured archaeological layers of Underworld, exploring this complex place in Greek myth and modern psyche, a place to which Pluto insists we descend where he appears natally or by transit.
We will explore some of the stories and relations of Pluto, including his relationship with Zeus and Poseidon; Demeter and Persephone; Orpheus; Mercury; Cerberus; and the Greek heroes; as well as his treasured helmet of invisibility. Each of these relations and objects offer potent images of Pluto when he constellates in the horoscope. In addition we will consider Pluto’s relationship with Underworld gods of other times and places, to gain a more nuanced sense of the many ways people may relate to Underworlds.
People and planets touched by Hades carry a knowing of zones of experience that are mostly unknown or disowned by others. Because the content is significant, and there is often a strong resistance to it, we are pushed to our limits by our encounter with it and must discover new resources to face it. And so, as well as being the god of the Underworld, Pluto was also known as a god of hidden wealth, and we will explore too the profound riches of this often avoided place.
As always in this webinar series, our interest is to complexify and nuance our understanding of the planetary archetype, to develop the capacity to recognize and engage the living symbol through sensuous, emotional, cognitive, imaginal, and relational ways.
