Pre-Reading Suggestions

All reading is optional. Often the best way to prepare is simply to contemplate your own dreams, journal, sketch fantasies, and prepare your body with care.

Read or Listen to the Myths Themselves

For those who would like to read, my best suggestion is to read or listen to translations of the Homeric epics, Homeric Hymns, plays by Aeschylus, Euripides. Especially listening to these and being read to can be a lovely way in. My suggested translations:

The Olympian Gods

Brian Clark, has written seven lovely essays on the Olympians, which he makes available on his mythology page at Astrosynthesis — just scroll down a bit and you will see the essays on each of the archetypal pairs beginning with “The Olympians: Hera and Zeus” and continuing through to "The Olympians: Poseidon and Hades”, also including our tutelary deities “The Olympians: Hestia and Hermes”.

Specific Sites we Will Visit:

  • Brauron - a piece by Emily Wilson, recently the first woman translator of the Odyssey and the Iliad published by a major publishing house

  • Delphi - a compilation of famous visits to the Oracle

  • Epidavros - a lecture by Guenter B. Risse on the Healing Cult of Asclepius
